Tonal harmony is based on stacking thirds. Tertian harmony is the term for that.
and stacking fifths is far from classical and it's far from jazz unless you count FREE FORM JAZZ!
if you wanna call Avant Garde jazz.

Gotta love Spongebob. Just sayin' lol Also, Doug has got me pretty interested in Theory. So, I'm taking a theory course pretty soon to edge myself up. xP I'll also be looking over this really intimidating thread, once I feel like I've got a pretty good grip on this stuff. xP

Now that I'm taking theory, this is one of the most useful threads on the forum. LOL

I'd like to learn a little about music theory as well. I know some of the basics, but I think that learning more would be useful for my music. Larx, tell us what you learned already!

Well, based on the stuff Doug has typed out here, I've learned (formally): Intervals, Major Scales (that's all that we've covered in class so far as far as scales go. I already know about minor scales, though. lol It's just that the correct order of whole tones and semitones never sticks in my mind, but we should begin covering minor scales and the pentatonic scale in my theory class real soon. :l), Triads, Music Theory Lingo, very little about Cadences, and very little about 7th Chords. That's about it, but I know more than what we've covered in class. lol Actually, according to my professors, I know the most in the class... which isn't that good because in my opinion, I don't even know that much. LOL

I should update this and put in the improv stuff I've learned in Jazz about substitute chords. Should. At some point. Probably the most interesting thing you could get out of this as a composer. Someday. Also, on knowing more than the class. This thread goes about a year and a half into theory as well as touches on commercial theory. If you understood this thread you would know the jist of about 3 semesters of theory (4th semester is just atonal stuff at least for California schools.)
