Hey there everybody. I'm just a regular person for whom SuperiorLarxene has been kind enough to compose music. That is what all the "Pokemon Rose" themes you may notice are about. I am working on creating a Fire Red hack (and have been for some time) that, fingers crossed, will have its own soundtrack implemented. (It's a matter of actually inserting that music, getting it to cooperate...it's a long story.)
So I view a video on SuperiorLarxene's channel and what do I find, but a link to a forum! And the rest is history.
My name is actually Bela, by the way.

Welcome to the Forums and so your the creator of this Pokemon Rose I've heard about from Larxene's new composed theme for the game. I'm wanting to make a hack of either HG/SS or B&W but do you mind helping me out by telling me what the tools of the trade are for the job?

Bela, welcome to the community! It is so awesome to establish contact with the genius behind Pokémon Rose. I have been tracking SuperiorLarxene's compositions for a while, wondering what this whole thing is about! Would you happen to have a fansite/project site that is open to the public? Now since advertising is frowned upon at this forum (a sad provision I incorporated into the rules), I cannot fairly ask you to post a link here. However, would you be willing to PM me a link if one exists? Also: I too am interested in this method of producing a fanmade game. If you would be willing to share a helpful hint or two, I think the community would really love you! Anywho, again, a warm welcome to this amazing community!

Well, there are a few things I would have to address to succinctly answer that. First, I should make the disclaimer that I am not in the traditional sense a "hacker." I know this term gets thrown around a lot when people create edits of games, but if I were to truly say I was doing as much, I think that would be misleading. I do not have the technical know-how of hex code and computer language that one might possess, but I do use programs and tools to achieve the objectives of editing for my game. Personally, based on what I've encountered in terms of other people who hack games, an interest and in-depth knowledge of a ROM's data structure is more akin to a person interested in pursuing a career in computer programming or something similar in the field of Engineering, something I am not pursuing. (For the record, my interest is in law. I don't consider learning all of the advanced details of editing the game a valuable investment of my time, since this is primarily something I do in my spare time and is by no means related to the career path I have chosen.) Second, with the above disclaimer in mind, my primary method of editing for my game is tools. If there isn't a tool or program for editing a feature, then in all likelihood I will not be editing that particular feature (that doesn't mean I can't, since I actually have accomplished editing in hex code, it's just not something I would regularly do!) So, with that in mind, the extent of my knowledge on editing a game and what I could prescribe to you is what programs I am aware of and use. Third, your interest is in editing a DS rom, whereas mine is a GBA rom. The difference is that there are different sets of tools, programs, etc to edit these roms since, from what I've seen, different sets of individuals have spent time creating those tools and programs separately for GBA/DS games (with only a few exceptions, and not to mention that GBA and DS data structures for things like maps are different). In other words, the programs I use to edit the GBA roms are not the ones you'd use to edit the DS roms. So to answer your question more directly, I don't know but I think kiwi.ds or something along those lines is an editor for DS games, as well as the tools that are on Project Pokemon since I know they're really into editing DS roms. Other than that I probably won't be of MUCH use to you for information on the subject.

If you would be willing to share a helpful hint or two, I think the community would really love you! Anywho, again, a warm welcome to this amazing community! At this current point in time, the places which have been graced with even the existence of Pokemon Rose are, in no real order: 1. a thread of the hack that I've posted on a few forums 2. Youtube through SuperiorLarxene's compositions 3. Victory Road through my occasional rantings about details there 4. This site 5. My computer and all my notes I have written and typed 6. My head And eventually I will try to transfer all the information locked up in #5 and #6 into some form on the Internet, perhaps whenever I decide I need to create a site for Rose lol As for how I became interested in producing my fanmade game, I guess I should state that first and foremost, Rose is a story I had been developing/working on by myself for years now. Basically, Rose is a Pokemon story that takes place in my own invented region with my own characters, plot, etc. and is something I've recently decided shouldn't just be a story in the back of my mind. That's my approach to creating this Pokemon hack, which is why this game will be incredibly story-driven, since it's entirely a story being translated into a game format. It's actually been a lot of fun doing that, since it required me to go back through basically the entire plot from start to finish, writing down where the player would go, what they'd do where, and it made me revise myself several times over. For example, not a single town has the exact same name that it had from the original (The starting town was "Whiteberg," and is now called "Springate.") Looking at the world map I drew up (and I've drawn several over the years, so yes this really has been an obsession of sorts), I decided some routes were way too long and put a small town or village in-between to compensate. That's how "Elderoak Town" and "Peatite Town" came into being. I also had the advantage of having a close relative help me in bouncing back and forth ideas in the past, which I basically collected when I started getting serious about creating this as a hack. Between me and him we came up with the original story, which is what I had been revising since then. And the revision process never really ends; I find myself still unsatisfied with a few points in the story, or how a particular event is played out, or how the dialogue would be written, and I decide to alter it. Basically, the way I work, this is a story first and a game second. So, naturally everything I'm working on gives the first objective priority. Now, that doesn't mean I have neglected the features of what would make this a Pokemon game. That has come about largely through revision and through analyzing how official Pokemon games (and hacks) lay out level spreads, how they go about showing off that particular versions set of "gimmicks." Really, it's been largely an analytical process for me, and I would imagine it would be the case for anyone else as well.
