So after having 2 or 3 of 15-20$ skullcandy earbuds break over the course of a year, I'm wondering whether it's worth it to invest in some headphones (that hopefully are sturdier?). Any discussion/thoughts on the subject guys?

#1: Don't buy Skullcandy earbuds, they break SOOOO easily. Mine broke within 3 weeks of using them. Now I have these awesome Sony earbuds AND THEY HAVE BASS. #2: Headphones would be worth it, if not, higher priced earbuds are just as good, I think. #4: I'm not a headphone/earbud master. Do some research if you're not sure. #5: Yes, I realized I skipped 3, I am just too lazy to fix it.

They both have their goods and bads, for general music listening I'd suggest earbuds since they fit in your pocket easier and you can carry them around with you (they're really fragile so I wouldn't suggest buying really expensive ones for that sort of thing). Now for music mixing I prefer my headset, headsets tend to have better sound quality and on top of that you can get them with active noise cancelling, which in itself is a huge plus.

I have both earbuds and a headset, I think that the headset/phones would be better choice when you stay at home or just where-ever you know is safe with you, earbuds however, is good for a few things, like just not really bothering other people and quick and easy access as wolf said, earbuds fit in your pockets easier.
only problem I know really is that earbuds don't get stressed because of your head's size. headphones, /might/ have that problem if your head is too big or small.

Headphones generally have much better sound quality in just about every way. Earbuds, however, are much more convenient and easy to carry around (without looking like a totally tool, anyway). I have both, and it works great like that. My headphones are for home/vacation/etc. and my earbuds are for traveling (around town, on the train, etc.) That system works really well for me, but it could potentially be expensive, depending on how conservative you're willing to be (or not be) with your sound quality. The only reason I have a pair of earbuds now is that they come with pretty much any Apple product, so they were free. But I was just fine with only headphones, and listening to music just in my house.
Wow, that's pretty rambley XD
It's quality vs convenience, to boil it down to the essentials.

@ops
I hear Beats are quite overpriced, I've got a pair of earbuds but they're the cheap ones (and by cheap, I mean $80)

Headphones when at home, all the way. I have a 10 year old pair of phillips ones that do just fine for bass. However when I'm out, I prefer earbuds. I'd avoid walking around town with a big pair of burger bun shaped headphones on my head cos I don't want to stand out :<

@ops I hear Beats are quite overpriced, I've got a pair of earbuds but they're the cheap ones (and by cheap, I mean $80) The kind of beats that you see everywhere are about $300. Without the branding, headphones like that would be worth maybe $125 at best. EDIT: And Zach, if you've got a recent iPod, you should definitely consider the convenience of having both earbuds and headphones. The remote on the newer Apple earbuds is the simplest but most satisfying luxury I can imagine.
