Greetings everyone! It is I, AlmightyArceus here to take over for this years Story to Set Us Free Contest! For those who have never participated in this contest before, here is basically how it works!
Participants in this contest will be both composing an original composition and writing a story to go along with it. You may do this process in whatever order, either writing the story first then music or vice versa, but both pieces must be turned in at the same time. You can write your story about ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING and compose WHATEVER YOU WANT--the whole point is having a story and song to set you free from whatever bounds you had. It's to fuel imagination and creativity and inspiration. I can honestly say that the piece Electropolis that I created for this contest last year (and which incidentally won) is one of my most creative and best I've made in terms of progression and musicality (I'm thinking of revamping it to improve sound quality.) I'm sure this contest will do the same for you!
Now, although there are no real rules for the writing of the story or the composition of the music, there are certain areas that you will be judged on for each. Here they are, listed below:
Story:
Creativity: This involves the concept and imagination of the story; how creative and engaging is your story? Have you thought up something awesome and original; engaging and thought out?
Imagery: Are the senses evoked when your story is read? Do you get clear, descriptive images of things? Are scenes/settings imaginative?
Plot/Substance: Characters, symbols, themes, morals, foils, dialogue, etc all play into this category
Composition:
Creativity: Basically, just make something that's not blatantly a rip off of someone/something else. And put your heart into it. Make something that you're proud of.
Composition: Do chords fit with notes? Are solos/melodies random or structured? Do all instruments fit the time signature and play at the right time? These are just basic composition things really; you won't be judged passed the basics on this one.
Correlation: Does you composition match up with your story? Does the song evoke feelings and senses similar to the story? Do your song and story speak a similar message?
*******
These and other, smaller subsects of these big categories will be the criteria when judged. Again, it does not matter what your story/song is about, how long each is; everything is entirely up to you! My only request is that you make it something you love; something you're satisfied with and not a last ditch effort to conjure up something because you're minutes from the deadline and wanted something in. Make it count, guys
All entries must be posted in this thread by Sunday, August 5th at 11:59 PM PST. Good luck to all! If you have any questions/concerns, you can PM me or post in the thread! Have fun!
EDIT: Collaboration projects ARE ALLOWED in this contest. When you submit the entry, simply say who is in the collab with you. In one or two sentences, describe who did what on your project--this will not contribute to scoring, I'm just interested in knowing lol. You may distribute the work of the collab in whatever way you wish; one could write the story, the other compose; or both of you contribute a bit of each into the story and song. No more than two members per collab
