One thing interesting about the pokemon games as that they seem to be in conflict between Nostalgia and New in the newer games. If you observe Heart Gold and such you can see many places where this sort of "fight happened:"
-Take the cries for example, here we are with the DS with possibly 5 times the tonal capabilities of the original Gameboy, and yet the game still used all the old cries from the original games. Good for nostalgia yes, good for the ears no: especially when you get into a fight mixing the cries of the newer pokemon with the cries of the old ones - the contrast of computer glitch sounds and more obviously instrumental sounds just clash like crazy. Perhaps it's time to redo these old cries to actually be more sonally pleasing, or at least not clash so much with the new ones.
-An opposite example would be the music from remakes like Heart Gold, while some tracks faired slightly decently in the transition - some, like the lavender town theme, which though retaining some of it's character in the remake for Gold and Silver, lost most of it in the HG and SS remakes. Remaking old video games for remakes is often either a hit or miss thing, but often times it seems to be a miss (though the item that allows you to play the game with the original soundtrack is quite interesting).
So what do you think is more important?
Maintain nostalgia, or modernizing a video game (of course this works for pretty much any game, many more recent Sonic games are huge examples of failure in modernization while other things, like new Mario games are often examples of this sort of thing gone well)?
