Someone mentioned it in class today and we got a lot of different answers. So I thought I'd ask everyone here, since we all compose/arrange and love music. lol I'd love to see some responses. :P

Wow, that's a difficult question to answer...
Well, here's my opinion. Music, like any other art form, is a way for one to express something, whether it's an emotion, a dream, a memory or a thought. It can be used to evoke certain thoughts or even actions in some cases, which is something that music seems to do better than the rest of the art forms/

In my view, music does many different things, mainly depending on what you do with it. Listening to it is a way to escape from the world, forget life, ease your mind. It can also be used to become more aware of the world around you, the way I see it.
On the other hand, creating music is basically everything HayRay said. Expressing yourself, creating certain emotions, telling a story; in ways words and actions just can't.

Another thing music does that I forgot to mention:
Sometimes music protrays the personality of the composer, or at least on a subliminal level.
If you're writing a song specifically for somebody else, it can reflect the nature of the relationship between you and that person, although this aspect won't always hold true.

To me, music is the ultimate form of expressing and conveying emotions if done according to how you feel. I feel like it can tell a story without words or visualizations, which is amazing because we have to visions to relate the notes to, we only get a sense of how it feels by our own reactions. That's just incredible to me. Take "In a Snow-Bound Land," by David Wise for DKC2. There's no textual evidence that there's some sort of sad story behind it, but it just sounds like there is, which is outstanding.
