Best RPG: hmmmm this is a pretty hard one: -Final Fantasy 10/Tactics Advanced -Mario: Thousand Year door (who'd expect mario to actually have a game with a good story?) -I'd love to say Earthbound here, but really I just haven't played it enough to say
Best Fighter: I really don't play many fighters so I don't really have anything to say here
Best Music: You mean genre or series?
Best Action: -Kingdom Hearts series: annoying fanboys/girls aside, this game is a great action game (I'd say it's more action then RPG) that has solid mechanics and such a weird story that somehow manages to inject gritty into things you used to watch as as a kid. -Metriod Series: pick any game (except metriod 2) and play it, there is not one game (aside from metriod 2) from this series that I wouldn't highly suggest playing. -Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, pretty much anything genesis era for Sonic is action gold, well really Sonic is more of a platformer series but it I guess it kinda fits in here well enough. -Custom Robo: yeah this is the game for the gamecube that pretty much everyone forgets, it's basically brawl on speed with robots on 3 dimensional arenas. -Zelda series - seems 2 is the unholy number, there is not one Zelda game I wouldn't suggest playing either except for Tloz 2, which isn't all that bad (/me continues to pretend the console which shall not be named never existed).
Best Shooter- -I don't really play enough of these to say either, and I'd probably consider the Metriod Prime series more of an action game anyways due to good ol' lock on.
Best Sports- Don't play enough to tell really
Best Party- "Party" genre games don't particularly sit well with me, I'd prefer a game to focus on developing it's mechanics instead of strewing tons of short, redundant and incredibly easy ones all over a gameboard.
Funnest- hmmm have to think about that one
Most difficult: -Tloz Majora's Mask: now this game isn't intensely difficult, more-so annoying in it's layout. The combination of fixed save points and the 3 day boom countdown going the entire game make this one huge frustration to play without save states.
-Megaman anything: okay well let's remove from the list the battlenetwork games (which still have their difficulty points) and the legend series. What are you left with? A series of action games with difficulties meant to make you cry, to seriously ruin your gamer ego. The first couple aren't really all that bad, but get to like 6 and you'll know what hard is (mainly on the bosses) - you'd never guess simple attack patterns could bring you to your knees so easily. For the original Nes games they have at max ~7 levels each, why? Well add any more in a game without saves and the game would be near impossible for anyone to beat. So let's fast forward to the Megaman X and Zero games - once again levels filled with plenty of ways to die, but what are arguably even more incredibly difficult bosses which will seriously wtfpwn you on your first 5 playthroughs. These games pretty much teach you the meaning of trial and error, as once you've learned the games nuances it overtime becomes pretty easy for you, basically like when you figure out the metal blades pretty much annihilate the other bosses in megaman 2.
-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: okay really, this game is a nightmare and a breeze at the same time, it's more annoying then difficult really. Let's start with your beginning character, this is pretty much how the game's difficulty is decided: -Grass Type: your screwed -any other type: nothing too hard -Pikachu: what difficulty? Why? Because this game was very poorly thought out in this matter, EVERY boss except a few is weak to pikachu: -articuno -moltres -skarmory -kyogre -rayquaza -and so on so forth Instead of providing an even boss spread, they just stick in as many birds as they can fit in the game. What other factors make this game annoying? -You lose pretty much everything of value if you die in a dungeon, you lose half your items regardless of their value and all your money if you die. Now this wouldn't be too much of a problem if you didn't die so cheaply sometimes: --your team-mates have the intelligence of bricks, sometimes wandering off for seemingly no reason, initiating battles with enemies if you don't baby their ai or being useless if you just leave them on the follow setting, wasting what could be useful items or simply finding a way to get into the absolute worst position possible for the fight. Because of this, using type advantages to your advantage is pretty freaking hard, occasionally leading to cheap deaths, especially when you can't switch the one your controlling. --Mechanics for getting new team mates are just horrendously bad, I mean for a game like the pokemon series where the objective is to get a good team going, this game makes team-building a huge pain to do. The whole random enemy decides to join you always either never works when you want it to, or always works when you don't. On top of that, pacing around the same floor trying to get a certain species to join you is made impossible too by the "mysterious force" which removes you from the dungeon, also making you lose all your items. The fact that you can only normally bring 3 members into a dungeon is also a pain, If I don't want anything more from that dungeon then I don't need to have the open slot, because of this you mainly get stuck with you, your partner (who's overly friendly "I'll stick with you to the very end for no real apparent reason" makes the story seem completely unnatural emotionally, unless he has some sort of cross-species man-crush on you or something) and 1 "strong" extra, while the rest of your ban is mainly rubbish. -Top this off with tedious 70+ level dungeons and repitive graphics and soundtrack (for every good song, there's like 2 dull, uninspired tracks that just seem to get on your nerves over time) and you'll be in for a pretty frustrating experience (dying at floor 80 in a dungeon due to a 1 hit by wobbefet on the leader with your team at full health = incredibly frustrating).
Personal Favorite: -Megaman Legends 1 & 2: I'd suggest the Megaman Legends games because really they are nothing like the other ones, not a single thing to do with any of the other games, except maybe the whole blue guy thing - what you get in these is an interesting third person shooter (note that this was before third person shooters really developed so the mechanics are a bit dated) combination rpg overall action game which focuses on exploring ruins full of things that want to kill you. The first one really is very story oriented, and through that is good for some people who like that sort of thing, though this is at the same time pretty tedious and at times annoying as you can easily get caught up in things you don't care about at all - though the game does feature one of the weirdest looking final bosses I've ever seen, and pretty much leaves you saying "whaaaaa?" about the story. In the second it seems they caught on to the annoyances of the first, and it's much more action oriented and has a control scheme that actually works. At the same time, there seems to be a bit less of a story this time around, with plenty of loose ends. I guess it's just nostalgia but I still love playing these occasionally (too bad the music to the series is overall meh).
Worst Game: -Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals (first one, never played the others): this game is okay at first, but quickly becomes a gaming nightmare of boredom later on when you realize this game has absolutely no story and is entirely meant to be played with a friend, or 4 (with four swords for zelda, this was when 4 player stuff was pretty popular with nintendo) using a separate GC to GBA cable for every person, each also having their own GBA with them - carrying around a jar to move without taking damage is possibly the worst mechanic every thought of. Also note the fugly Moogles in this game.
-Tak and the Power of Juju - any game other then the first Now I had a lot of fun with the first game, sure it wasn't amazing but it was both humorous and a solid puzzle/action game. Now when I got the second game a while after it came out due to it's cheap price I just stopped caring about the game half-way through. I know when I'm playing a cheap cash-in
-Crash Twinsanity: well this is actually probably a bit harsh, I actually liked a lot of this game. It's when you get to the end and realize "that's it? whaaaa?" and you start looking at some of the things they actually had planned for the game that you realize the game was cut pretty short for time, and instead had the difficulty in some other areas ramped up to compensate - seriously, the ship level wasn't difficult because of challenging platforming, it was just extremely tedious, and what's with the whole teamwork thing? The ENTIRE game when playing as crash and cortez, cortez is stuck in the fighting over the crystal animations, grunts and all. Now the soundtrack itself is an interesting curiosity though, I wouldn't say I necessarily liked it, or thought it was really good but it's definitely an interesting take.
